  • 9 tbsp unsalted butter (for caramel filling)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar (for caramel filling)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for caramel filling)
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (for caramel filling)
  • 1/4 tsp salt (for caramel filling)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, cold (for frosting)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.
  2. Brown the butter in a saucepan over medium heat until golden and nutty; let cool slightly.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, mix granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, buttermilk, and cooled brown butter.
  5. Gradually combine dry ingredients with the wet mixture using a rubber spatula until just mixed.
  6. Divide batter into prepared pans and bake for 30-36 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
