Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 blood orange
  • 1 navel orange
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar (divided)
  • 4 teaspoons grated orange zest
  • 1 cup strained fresh orange juice
  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ⅓ cup unsalted butter
  • ⅓ cup sour cream
  • 3 large eggs

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oranges: Slice the blood and navel oranges into thin rounds. In a saucepan, combine water and sugar, bringing to a simmer until dissolved. Add oranges and simmer for about 10 minutes until softened. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan with butter or non-stick spray.
  3. Make the Batter: Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in one bowl. In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in sour cream, fresh orange juice, and zest until combined. Slowly mix in dry ingredients until just combined.
  4. Assemble the Cake: Arrange candied orange slices on the bottom of the prepared pan and pour the batter evenly over them.
  5. Bake: Place the pan in the oven and bake for about 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before inverting onto a platter.
